Using frozen garlic isn’t as good as using fresh chopped garlic; but it sure is easy! Plus you don’t have to worry about trying to get rid of that garlic smell on your fingers.
Adding fresh garlic to any dish is certainly one way to add flavor to many recipes that you make at home. While shopping at Trader Joe’s, you might have seen this premade crushed garlic in the freezer section- that’s pretty unique. Yet, is this the holy grail of cooking for those who don’t have time to prepare freshly minced garlic in their dishes?
Frozen minced garlic from TJs
Believe what you want, there is no substitute for having freshly peeled garlic chopped or minced for all of your cooking needs. But what happens when you don’t have any garlic around and need to add a fresh garlic taste. This is where one select product from TJs is going to rock your world. If you can find this product in stock at your local Trader Joe’s, you’ll want to act quickly and grab as many as you can.
The name of the product is from a company called Dorot and is actually imported directly from Israel. It’s a processed crushed garlic paste that’s every bit as garlic tasting as you can imagine and will need to be kept frozen until you use it. What makes this product special is that each 80-gram package contains 16 individual cubes. Each cube equals an exact single tablespoon and makes this excellent for recipes and general cooking where garlic is needed.
How does this crushed garlic product taste?
Despite the added ingredients used to help stabilize this product, it can be stored in your freezer for several months -and the results will surprise you. There’s a total of 91% garlic that is minced with soybean oil, sea salt, and lemon concentrate. The package mentions that these are cubes, but in reality, they’re oval shapes laid out on an easy to pop out pieces from the foil-backed package, similar to plastic sealed vitamins.
The process of packaging preserves the flavor of garlic so well that it tastes just like fresh garlic. It can be hard to tell if you compare fresh garlic and Dorot crushed garlic side by side. With that being said, real garlic fans will be excited to get their hands on this product so they can decide for themselves.
Is this product only for cooking?
It seems understandable that recipes such as chili, spaghetti, soups, and sauces are going to require garlic. Then there are such delicate treats as garlic toast, appetizers, dips, and cream spread that will also be perfect for using these individual garlic servings. Imagine how easy it would be to create salsa and chip dips with fresh-tasting garlic cubes from the freezer. The practical uses for nearly any recipe will make this portable product an instant classic must-have.
What are the benefits of this product?
If you’re looking to extend the lifespan of these little rounded nuggets, you’ll have more practical control if you decide to have them freeze-dried. Each of these individually frozen pieces is placed onto a freeze-dry tray and then allowed to remove all the water from them. What is left over is a shelf-stable product that can be vacuum-packed and used for several years. This is a cost-effective benefit that goes way beyond the product’s expiration date.

These are my favorite things ever. I use them to whip up quick pasta sauces, in soups, in marinades, as a brushing oil with butter for garlic bread, and in anything else I can think of. They are so convenient, perfectly garlicky, and way easier than chopping, dicing, or smashing garlic cloves. One cube is equal to one clove, and I think come in a package for $.. It’s a great deal, super easy, and they keep forever in the freezer without having to worry about them going rancid. I like the basil cubes, too, but I find myself reaching for the garlic ones more.
