Perhaps you’ve never thought of buying sweets at Trader Joe’s since you can never tell if they’re going to be worth the money. Here’s our review of two interesting caramel products that come from TJ’s and how they can best be used.
Soft and Salty Fleur De Sel Caramel
If you love the flavor of Brach’s or Kraft caramel candy, you’ll find that this generic version that is exported from France will surprise you. It’s not as sweet or hard as the big name brand versions, but then again the candy flavor in Europe is meant to be subtle. This version of soft caramel has real sea salt from the southern coast of France. It’s also a bit more like saltwater taffy and can be softer than most caramels you’ve tried before.
Because these caramels contain coconut oil, they stay nice and soft for a lot longer than most. If you want to remove the wrapper faster, one solution is to store them in your fridge so the wrapper pops off easily. If you don’t do this the wrapper will stick to the caramel surface and little bits are left behind. You’ll want to do this if you live around warm climates or during the summer months.
One great tip is making caramel apples with these candies. The advantage is that the low melting point is faster than the harder versions you get from other stores. It’s also not going to yank out your teeth when biting into an apple since this caramel is so soft and easily chewable.
Fluer De Sel Caramel Sauce
This version of Trader Joe’s caramel candy is formulated to be much creamier and spreadable much like peanut butter or Nutella. This makes this salty caramel sauce perfectly ideal for adding to coffee drinks, milkshakes, and hot beverages. When it’s left out in a room temperature area, it will be very easy to drizzle onto ice cream. To get a thicker version, you can put it into the fridge so it can be scooped out with a warm spoon.
Kids and parents will love this for dipping fruit slices into since the flavor is closer to butterscotch than it does to the overly sugary Brach’s and Kraft caramels. Other great ideas can include using this for crepes, pancakes, or mixed into oatmeal. It’s also ideal for adding to recipes for making cookies or baked goods. There is also the option for adding this sauce to all types of yogurt, or even into frosting toppings meant for cupcakes.
You can’t go wrong with whatever this caramel sauce is added to, even if you want to have a sweet snack right out of the jar. When you have friends who are real caramel lovers, this also makes an excellent gift to add to a basket filled with other tasty crackers fruits, and goodies. Because it does have some preservatives and natural sea salt added, it’ll last a lot longer than most caramel sauces you get in the US.

If you’ve ever watched caramel being made and instantly craved it, only to be disapointed because it never tastes as good as the decadent ingredients… Then you have to taste this caramel!!! It’s amazingly delicious- no artificial flavor tinge at all. You can taste the quality of the ingredients and sweet/saltiness is perfection.

Oh, my goodness! This stuff is to die for. It’s fabulous served warm over vanilla ice cream. I also used it as a base for caramel French toast casserole and it was amazing. Eaten with a spoon right out of the jar is hard to beat! Beth B

I received this as a gift and it was fantastic! It has wonderful texture and flavor both room temperature or heated up. We have found many uses for it but have to say the family favorite is over ice cream!
